Mission for this Position

Baffinland is currently looking for its next best plumbing apprentice.

 

Candidates will join as trades assistants for six months, job shadowing and learning about their perspective trade. Upon successful completion of the six month introduction, candidates will write the Trades Entrance Exam. 

 

Once enrolled in that program, candidates will become full time permanent apprentices at Baffinland.   Below are listed the apprentice positions as well as a brief description of each position. Main Accountabilities

  • Study the building plans and specifications to determine the layout for the plumbing and other materials
  • Locate and mark the positions for connections and fixtures
  • Cut holes through walls and floors to accommodate pipes
  • Select the type and size of pipe required and measure, cut, thread, bend, clamp, solvent cement or solder pipe
  • Assemble and install valves and fittings
  • Join pipe sections and secure them in position
  • Test pipe systems for leaks
  • Install underground storm sanitary and water piping system
  • Ensure that all work performed is in a manner that conforms to all site safety policies and procedures
  • Maintain equipment and tools in good working order
  • Able to follow detailed instructions and communicate clearly

Main Qualifications

The term of apprenticeship for a plumber is 4 years (four 12-month periods) including a minimum of 1500 hours of on-the-job training and 8 weeks of technical training each year.

 

To be considered you must meet the following requirements:

 

High school Graduate Certificate

 

OR a pass mark in all five Canadian General Educational Development (GED) tests

 

OR a successful completion of the trades entrance exam

 

OR a successful completion of the trade specific pre-apprenticeship program at Arctic College
