Currently, Baffinland has an immediate opening for an Environmental Technician to join our team on site. The Technician will be responsible for performing technical inspections, regulatory inspections, environmental sampling, analysis and environmental reporting. The Technician will also provide support to the rest of the Environmental group as needed in the field.

Main Accountabilities

  • Conduct field monitoring and sampling programs as required under existing permits, licences, and the company's Environmental Management System.
  • Assisting process and environmental engineers with specific tasks relating to wastewater treatment activities
  • Processing, packing, and shipping collected samples as required.
  • Conduct field analyses of field samples using on-site portable analyzers and meters
  • Calibrating, installing and maintaining sampling and monitoring equipment
  • Entering and managing collected field and laboratory data into the environmental database
  • Regularly updating, filing, and managing environmental documentation.
  • Conduct internal due diligence compliance inspections of various site facilities and operational activities
  • Filling out pertinent forms related to environmental monitoring, spills and incidents and follow-up.
  • Assisting in the preparation and implementation of environmental training exercises.
  • Other technical field and office tasks to support the sustainable development and site operations groups.
  • Conducting regular environmental and technical inspections of site infrastructure and construction areas
  • Participating and assisting in waste management and environmental baseline studies
  • Mentoring contractual summer environment technicians under the Company’s Environmental Management System.
  • Perform the role of Environmental Coordinator when resources requires it.

Main Qualifications

  • Degree or Diploma in Environmental Science or related discipline1-3 years’ experience working in industry under the environmental discipline
  • Northern/ arctic experience and working in a mine considered to be an asset
  • Valid Provincial or Territorial driver’s license (or willingness to apply for).
  • Fire Arms Certificate (FAC) or Possession and Acquisition License (PAL) (or willingness to apply for)
  • Training or experience with water and effluent monitoring, sampling, and field level analytical techniques.
  • Excellent organizational skills and the ability to adapt and learn quickly on the job.
  • Experience with outboard motors, boats (Pleasure Craft Boat License), snowmobiles and GPS.
  • Experience and proficiency with Microsoft suite of software products such as Word, Excel and Powerpoint
  • Priority will be given to Inuit candidates.
