    Baffinland Iron Mines Corporation (“Baffinland” or the “Company”) is the owner, operator and developer of a fly-in/fly-out, direct shipping iron ore mining and logistics operation located at Mary River, on Baffin Island, in Nunavut Territory, Canada.  The operation consists of an open-pit mine, crushing and screening facilities, mine and ore haulage roads, port infrastructure and ore dock capable of loading up to Panamax size vessels during the open-water season.  As part of the planned, progressive approach to the construction and operation of the mine, the Company recently announced its plans to increase production from 5.0 Mtpa to 12.0 Mtpa through the construction of a northern railway transportation corridor.


    The Senior Financial Analyst position is based out of the BIM Corporate office and reports to the Executive Vice-President, Corporate Development.  Key responsibilities will include the development, analysis and maintenance of detailed long-term financial/strategic operating and project cash flow models, commercial revenue and ore carriage shipping reporting and projections and the evaluation of complex long and short-term funding opportunities.  This role contains a significant opportunity to create business value through adhoc analysis such as operations profitability analysis, what-if analysis, and long-term scenario planning.

    Main Accountabilities

    • Create new and maintain existing financial models to drive quantitative insights to support business decisions and/or opportunities assessment; financial models includes special focus on revenue/customer contract analysis, shipping, operations scenario planning and analysis and short/long-term forecasting (5-20 years);
    • Providing analytics (models, trend analysis, market share) to help support decision making related to sales and cost improvements;
    • Manage iron ore sales and port activities including invoicing, mark-to-market adjustments and related;
    • Maintain sales reporting tools; perform trending analysis; preparation of monthly/quarterly/annual sales variance analysis;
    • Assist in the areas of commercial/contract origination and administration and related matters, including (a) follow-up with customer counterparties; (b) shipping and port management and development of budgets / forecasts for the Corporate Development / Shipping group;
    • Review operating results, identifying key trends and variance analysis, identification of risks, gaps to target and areas of improvements
    • Working with the Operations and Projects teams, carry out detailed analyses of key operational and project drivers and opportunities;
    • Evaluate financing/long and short-term funding opportunities, including lease financing, loans and capital market financing transactions;
    • Assist in the analysis and origination of strategic financings and/or other short/long term funding terms with lenders/bankers;
    • Prepare financial presentations, operating and capital expenditure analysis, industry/peer group comparisons, highlighting the most relevant and important findings;
    • Staying current with financial and industry developments. Identify market opportunities and carry out market research, explore investment opportunities and options.
    • Liaising with other departments including project development, operations, financial and management accounting and tax on a range of issues;
    • Other responsibilities as defined by the EVP Corporate Development from time to time.

    Main Qualifications


    • A degree in math or engineering with company experience in financial reporting and analysis, business administration and/or finance (MBA is an asset)
    • Investment banking, mining and/or engineering company experience strongly preferred but not mandatory;
    • Excellent computer skills; with proficiency in Microsoft office products
    • Excellent detailed financial statement, revenue, cost, cash flow analysis/management and related analytical and operations evaluation skills a must
    • Ability to meet deadlines and thrives in a dynamic and challenging environment
    • Strong ability and desire to contribute to continuous improvement environment
    • Effective communication skills, including ability to write in a well-organized, cohesive, and concise manner
    • Motivated, self-starter with hands-on approach
    • Team management skills and ability to accomplish work in a team setting.
