Currently Baffinland Iron Mines is looking for a Product Quality Geologist to lead the technical team on the Mary River Project. We are seeking a dynamic individual who will be responsible to take part in, as well as plan, administer and coordinate the technical team to meet the objectives of the mine while maximizing the economic mining life of the Mines through prudent recovery of existing known resources.

 

This position is located at site with a 2 week Fly-In, Fly-Out rotation.

Main Accountabilities

  • Routinely monitor results and trends in physical and chemical performance across the product chain
  • Identify trends of nonconformance in product quality and implement corrective actions in a timely manner
  • Interpret metallurgical, chemical and physical data for use in short and long term mine planning
  • Compile and manage incoming data, interpret results, and present to management in a timely manner
  • Optimize product quality monitoring procedures across the entire product quality chain
  • Improve predictability of product quality from mine planning to shipping
  • Provide training and mentorship to personnel involved in the product quality chain. 
  • Oversee specialized projects requiring the application of product quality and geological knowledge
  • Technical report writing
  • Manage and assist personnel with sampling 
  • Provide assistance to operating and engineering staff in mine planning; indicating ore outlines, lithological contacts and structural features on plans and sections.
  • Ensure effective grade control in the mine; optimum ore recovery with minimal dilution by directing and monitoring of ore and rock according to the mining plan and cut-off grades.
  • Calculate and document daily grade and dilution rate for the mine, including computer generation of various reports for production and technical supervisors.
  • Contribute to and participate in the development of and maintenance of safe work procedures for Mine Operations in order to achieve an increased level of health, safety and environmental awareness that will promote efforts for an injury free and environmentally responsible workplace.

  • Achieve/exceed production quality and quantity targets while maximizing economic resource recovery

 

  • Environmental/Physical Demands:
  • Work in extreme low temperatures down to minus 40 Celsius.
  • Physically able to use all standard hand tools and lifting up to 25 kg
  • Work for 12 hour long daily shifts for a two week period

Main Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Geology or Mettalury.
  • Experience working as a metallurgist, or in a geology type role at a mine, preferably in open pit mine.
  • 3+ years of relevant experience.
