    Baffinland Iron Mines Corporation (“Baffinland” or the “Company”) is a Canadian mining company, focused on the exploration, development and operation of its Mary River Property (the “Project”), which consists of nine plus high-grade lump and fine iron ore deposits that can be mined, crushed and screened into saleable direct ship ore products, located in the Qikiqtani Region of Nunavut on Baffin Island.

    The Project concluded a successful ramp-up to its initial rated capacity during 2015 and achieved commercial production. Management is currently focused on transitioning the mine from a truck haul operation into a rail based transportation and expanding its capacity to an optimal level. 

    The Corporate Accountant position is based out of the BIM Corporate office, located in Oakville, and reports to the Assistant Controller. 

    Duties overall include month-end accounting and reporting, general ledger maintenance and reconciliation, financial analysis, and forecasting and comparisons; analysis of budgeted and actual spending, physical inventory, and product costing; performing research in response management inquiries; analyzing financial information as part of the financial reporting process; and performing other general accounting and analytical duties as requested by the Assistant Controller.

    Main Accountabilities

    • Fixed assets, assets under construction and mining interest tracking and reporting, including settlements of costs;
    • Develop and maintain all financial and management reporting for accounts payable and accruals, including corporate and mine site accruals;
    • Co-ordination with site accountants on period end accruals;
    • Review of supplier account reconciliations;
    • Fuel and parts supplies inventory reporting, settlement, consumption and analysis;
    • Accounting and analysis of ore inventory, including maintaining the ore inventory costing model. Ensures this model is up to date, accurate and complete
    • Provide back-up to other accounting roles or/function as required/requested.
    • Keeping up to date with financial accounting and industry developments;
    • Assist as necessary with regulatory filings such as Statistics Canada surveys;
    • Position requires some flexible working hours;
    • Travel to the mine site on a quarterly basis is essential;
    • Other responsibilities as defined by the Assistant Controller from time to time.

    Main Qualifications

    • Chartered professional accountant (professional designation);
    • Previous mining industry or capital intensive industry experience preferred;
    • Excellent knowledge of accounting (IFRS) and practices.
    • 5+ years related experience;
    • An analytical mind with problem-solving aptitude;
    • Proactive with a “hands on approach” to achieving results;
    • Proficient in MS Office and SAP;
    • Ability to meet deadlines and thrives in a challenging environment;
    • Strong ability and desire to contribute to continuous improvement environment;
    • Keen eye for detail;
    • Excellent communication skills (written and oral)
