    We are looking for people ready to share, build, and grow with our company. Baffinland Iron Mines is seeking an Inuk Elder on site on a permanent basis. The selected candidate will be responsible for helping implement the IIBA as counselor, mentor and a contact person for bridging gaps on any employment issue on site.

    The purpose of the Inuk Elder on site is to work proactively with project team and contractors to establish and maintain a system that promotes safety culture across the project and eventually into operations.


    Please note: this is a permanent position requiring a 2 week Fly - In, Fly-Out Rotation.

    Main Accountabilities

    • Provide counseling and guidance to Inuit employees about working at site and working with their supervisors or other relevant departmental personnel (HR, Environmental, Safety, etc) to resolve issues     
    • Provide counseling and guidance to non-Inuit about cultural differences and related employment issues
    • Provide support to management in working to enhance and advance Inuit in the workplace
    • Complete written translations in generally acceptable Inuktitut dialects; able to verbally interpret in person as necessary
    • Facilitate training as required for Inuit and non-Inuit staff in cultural differences and successfully working together
    • Assist Baffinland HR with administrative and onboarding activities as related to Inuit employees
    • Work closely with the recreation and social committees to identify, develop, encourage and facilitate cross cultural activities at site
    • Provide Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit (“IQ” or Inuit Knowledge) on site when requested to employees and Supervisors
    • Participate in any local town hall or general employee information meetings that may be held from time to time
    • Provide support and redirect employees to their supervisor or other relevant departmental personnel (HR, Environmental, Safety, etc) to resolve issues
    • Flexible with time at work to ensure the ability to meet people on both day and night shift and at both the port and mine facility
    • Maintain a list of elders and translators/interpreters in the North Baffin communities that he may contact for advice
    • Log all assistance provided to employees, supervisors, managers, etc.
    • Produce weekly reports to his/her site supervisor and to the IIBA Manager
    • Provide recommendations for local community services for Inuit employees (outside counselling, personal issues)

    Main Qualifications

    • Able to speak, read and write in Inuktitut and English
    • Fully experienced and able to use MS Outlook, MS Word, PowerPoint Slide and Excel Spreadsheet programs
    • Seen as an Elder role model in their community and has served as an advisor, counselor, philosopher and leader in his/her community
    • Must be in good standing in their home community
    • Positive presence and positive outlook with a non-judgemental problem solving approach to issues, incorporating IQ where possible
    • Provides a function of the respect accorded to individuals in each community who exemplify the values and lifestyle of Inuit culture
    • Ability to identify and understand cultural barriers and help identify and present practical solutions
    • Non-judgemental 
    • Willingness to learn and adhere to Baffinland policies and procedures
