    Currently Baffinland is seeking Mine Superintendent for Mary River Site. This is a permanent position with a rotation schedule of 2/2.


    Reporting to the Mine Manager the position is responsible for the safe and efficient operations of an Open Pit Mine.  The role responsibilities will include detailed coordination with Mine Maintenance, Engineering, and Geology groups.

    Main Accountabilities

    • Review of operational plans to ensure the capability of the group.
    • Meet objectives and comply with; safety plans, incident reporting process, policy/procedure reviews, MOC process, etc.
    • Using practical judgment within the limits set by the Manager, to manage social problems as they occur.
    • Approve work orders and purchase orders for the department.
    • Support the development of the annual budget and 5-year operating / capital plans. 
    • Monitor the operating and capital expenditures over the life of the complex.
    • Develop innovative opportunities to improve the efficiency of operations.
    • Supports asset integrity reviews and development of action plans to address ‘at risk’ assets.
    • Mentor and provide performance feedback to team members. Coach and counsel employees on the standards of behavior, and take corrective actions as required including discipline.
    • Assist in the forecast mine equipment requirements to meet the execution plan. 
    • Ensures equipment capital justifications are created.
    • Support development of the department's annual execution plan and develops area specific, goals and objectives.
    • Provide input and work collaboratively with peers and other departments to achieve capital, production and/or maintenance projects/schedules.
    • Fills in for the Mine Manager as required.
    • Environmental/Physical Demands: 

    Work in extreme low temperatures down to minus 40 Celsius.

    Physically able to use all standard hand tools and lifting up to 25 kg

    Operation of equipment for 12 hour long daily shifts for a two week period.

    Main Qualifications

    • Bachelor’s degree in Mining, Civil, Geology, will consider operating superintendents with equivalent experience.
    • Professional Shift Boss or Supervisor Ticket in Nunavut (or with the capability to register).
    • 10 years or more of open pit mining experience with at least 4 years in a supervisory role.
    • Arctic experience would be beneficial.
    • Experience working with aboriginal communities would be an asset.
    • Experience working in remote mining camps.
