    We are currently looking for our next great employee. Baffinland Iron Mines is seeking a Health and Safety Superintendent to join our team at our Mary River mine site.

     

    The Superintendent provides support to the HSES Manager with specific responsibility to develop and implement project specific HSS strategies, policies, standards, procedures and objectives for the Mary River project.  Provides guidance and coaching to site HSS staff, site supervisors, workers and contractors with the objective to maintain a strong and positive site safety culture.

     

    Please note: this is a permanent position requiring a 2-week Fly - In, Fly-Out Rotation

    Main Accountabilities

    • Build and maintain positive working relationship with management, supervisors, employees and contractors while finding solutions to health, safety and security challenges in the workplace.
    • Works with all departmental superintendents to develop and implement health, safety and security documentation including policy, programs, standards and procedures.
    • Review and ensure HS&S policies, programs, tools, standards and procedures are communicated and implemented consistently across the project including all employees, client team, EPCM and contractors
    • Complete regular audits and reviews of HS&S policies, programs, tools, standards, procedures and legal safety requirements are developed and implemented, including appropriate corrective action for deficiencies and documentation.
    • Maintain, complete and communicate a comprehensive a consolidated corrective action database to ensure effective close out of corrective actions from all sources
    • Establish HS&S training programs and liaise with department management to ensure adequate processes are in place for employee and contractor safety training.
    • Develop and maintain an integrated HS&S management system, plan and programs that deliver upon internal BIM policies and standards as well all regulatory requirements and Nunavut Mines health, safety and security Regulations with corrective actions taken as necessary.
    • Establish and maintain a process to accurately record safety data such as accident/incident information, HS&S training records and safety documentation
    • Develop and maintain an accurate database spreadsheet to ensure the accurate recording of HS&S statistics
    • Conduct reviews on statistical information to look for trends with incidents and mechanism of injury and prepare solutions along with the HHS for implementation
    • Assist and mentor team members and employees in incident information gathering, identifying the root causes, completeness of investigation findings and the effectiveness of the recommended controls.
    • Conduct monthly control audit effectiveness audits to ensure selected controls will prevent a reoccurrence of incidents.
    • Provide daily support to site personnel and staff for compliance to site safety and legal requirements.
    • Provide department support for routine site safety related meetings (i.e. tool box and safety meetings)
    • Establish and support HR in a Return to Work procedure and ensure it is communicated and implemented for injured workers.
    • Act as the main site contact for the Mines inspector and all written communications
    • Maintain a rolling WSCC report for any mines inspector orders and ensure timely closure of recommended actions and prepare along with the responsible departmental manager any variances opposing an open order.
    • Provide direction and guidance to the MRT trainer, including;
    • Develop and maintain an up to date Emergency Response Plan and run mock scenarios at the Port and Mine sites (on a likely incident) annually or as per the mines regulations
    • Assist EMTL during Code 1 emergencies
    • Provide direction and guidance to all safety staff, including;
    • Ensure the OHS&S committee process is implemented, managed and any issues or concerns tables and resolved as required by the Mines Regulations
    • Develop, implement and maintain an industrial hygiene sampling program to meet all internal and Mines Regulations
    • Develop, maintain and deliver weekly, monthly and annual HS&Sand MRT reports to HH&S
    • Review all HS&S standard operating procedures for compliance and effectiveness annually
    • Act as a lead and ensure all HS&S departmental employees are experts in the Job Hazard Analysis and field level risk assessment tools
    • Write daily relevant and meaningful safety memos to assist teams with mitigating emerging risks and hazards
    • Develop and maintain a site inspection template and perform regular inspections on all areas

    Main Qualifications

    • University science or engineering degree. 
    • 15 plus years in the mining sector with preferable experience in remote or arctic locations.
    • Minimum 10 years’ experience in a HS&S leadership position.
    • Advanced Mines Rescue and Crisis Management, proficient with the Nunavut Mines regulations and act, advanced incident investigation and writing skills.
    • Advanced computer skills with proven experience as an inspirational leader and effective influencer.
    • Experienced at building and maintaining positive workplace relationships while finding solutions to health, safety and security challenges in the workplace.
    • Experienced in a cross-cultural work environment.
    • Excellent organizational, verbal and written communication skills are essential
