Report directly to the Manager, Environmental, Social and Governance and work closely with the Baffinland Community Liaison Officers (BLCOs), and Shipping Monitors to support the daily functions associated with any relevant environmental monitoring activities that may be occurring in the community and region, and provide liaison between the community of Pond Inlet, the Mittimatalik Hunters and Trappers Organization (MHTO), hunters, Qikiqtani Inuit Association (QIA), relevant local environmental non-governmental organizations and governmental agencies, as well as university researchers and Baffinland.


The role is based in Pond Inlet and open to Pond Inlet Inuit applicants.

Main Accountabilities

  • Provide liaison between the community of Pond Inlet, the MHTO, hunters, QIA, relevant local environmental non-governmental organizations and governmental agencies univeristy researchers  and Baffinland;
  • Act as the primary liaison between community members, MHTO, Hamlet and Baffinland to discuss and/or resolve potential community concerns related to environmental monitoring;
  • Conduct daily tracking (through visual observations, sat imagery, local reporting) including note/photo-taking/data uploads of local environmental conditions;
  • Compile environmental data and prepare relevant summary reports on observations, any reported concerns and wildlife observations;
  • Attend and host community-based information sessions, as needed;
  • Support logistics/coordination as required of community-led environmental monitoring initiatives;
  • Provide monitoring and recording equipment for community-based or Baffinland-led environmental monitoring initiatives;
  • Support sampling of wildlife tissue sampling, provide training for local Baffinland-led monitoring programs;
  • Develop and maintain database on relevant regional monitoring programs,
  • Answer incoming phone/radio calls, emails, and faxes and relay these incoming messages related to environmental topics to the appropriate person at Baffinland, as required;
  • Support data compilation, analysis and reporting of Baffinland’s ongoing environmental reporting efforts;
  • Report to the Company on community-based environmental initiatives that are taking place;
  • Attend environmental working group meetings, prepare meeting minutes, and support meeting action tracking; and
  • Work with the Communications Department to prepare community-focused materials for communicating environmental-related information;
  • Share information to community members on Baffinland’s existing environmental mitigation and management measures applicable to terrestrial, freshwater and marine environments;
  • Share relevant information on ongoing marine and terrestrial monitoring programs being completed by Baffinland using social media to provide updates to residents/hunters, and other stakeholders in Pond Inlet on Baffinland activities;
  • Prepare end-of-year summary report on local observations.

Main Qualifications

  • Diploma in Environmental-related field;
  • Knowledge and Experiance in Hunting/Fishing 
  • Demonstrated use of computers including data entry and tracking, ease of working with the public, and summarizing information for public.
