Reporting to the Engineering Manager, the Civil Engineer based in Oakville or surrounding area is to confer with various company departments and other members of the central engineering team on a daily basis, conducting research to determine assigned project requirements. The Civil engineer will plan, review designs, design, develop, and manage various projects at Mary River, Milne Port, and Steensby Port for the construction of buildings, earth structures, powerhouses, roads, airports, railways, bridges, dams, water management systems, water distribution and sanitation that are safe and capable of withstanding the loading to which they are exposed. The Civil Engineer ensures assigned projects are estimated professionally, meet the requirements of the requesting department, adhere to the budget and schedule throughout construction, achieve quality parameters, and are performed in compliance with established health, safety, environmental, regulatory and internal corporate requirements.

 

Main Accountabilities

• Develop construction specifications and plans for assigned projects. Ensures safeguarding of life, health, property, economic interests, the public welfare, the company’s welfare, and environment through best engineering practices and compliance with applicable code.
• Research, evaluate, recommend, and plan major civil projects in conjunction with 3rd party consultants
• Review and evaluate tenders for assigned projects. Develop cost estimates for the entire project scope.
• Provide technical advice and problem solving to the Company related to water management, earthworks, building infrastructure, dams, bridges, airport runways, and roads to withstand the extreme arctic environment in a creative, efficient, and cost effective manner. Ensure the solutions safeguard life, health, property, economic interests, the public welfare, the company’s welfare, and the environment, as well as adhere and comply with all company and legislated requirements.
• Manage projects by preparing the budget and schedule, tracking spending and the use of project resources, updating schedules, administering contracts, and selecting appropriate construction materials available onsite to meet design criteria.
• Obtain approvals from regulators/government officials on the construction of the designs.
• In collaboration with Operations and the site project management team, develop, implement, and adhere to safe work procedures for construction plans by promoting high safety, health and environmental awareness and compliance to all standards.

Main Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering
  • Professional Engineer registered in Ontario or Nunavut
  • 12 to 15 years experience in civil engineering in mining or construction sector
  • Experience with AUTOCAD, Civil 3D, SolidWorks or similar software
  • Experience with arctic engineering
  • Digital Literacy skills: Knowledge of digital tools and technology. Proficient with standard office software such as Microsoft Office - Excel, Word, Microsoft Project, and Primavera, or similar software
  • Communication skills: Ability to communicate clearly and effectively both written and verbal, for conveying ideas, instructions, and information to colleagues, external parties, and superiors.
  • Client Focus skills: Ability to identify and prioritize customer needs and recognise constraints, adopt a professional approach to customers, and seek to provide a better service. Is reliable and delivers on promises.
  • Interpersonal Effectiveness skills: Ability to influence the views and behaviour of others through persuasion and encouragement and manage conflict or other sensitive issues tactfully and effectively. Ability to adapt behaviour to a wide range of people.
