Reporting to the Environmental Coordinator, the Environmental Technician in Training position will work closely with Environmental Technicians and other field staff to learn how to conduct field monitoring, environmental sampling and perform environment compliance monitoring for site operations. Candidates who self-identify as Inuit enrolled under the Nunavut Agreement will be given priority. This role will also provide support to the entire Environmental department as needed in the field.

 

Main Accountabilities

• Assisting with field monitoring and sampling programs as required under existing permits, licenses, and the company's Environmental Management System (including surface, lake and ground water, effluent, soil and dustfall sampling)
• Assisting with compliance inspections of various site facilities and operational activities
• Participating/ assisting with environmental baseline studies, fish habitat monitoring, erosion and sediment control measures, and active migratory bird nest surveys
• Assisting with spill prevention and spill response
• Maintaining detailed and comprehensive field notes.
• Maintaining sampling and monitoring equipment.
• Performing pre-op inspections of environmental support gear (snow mobiles, augers, boats)
• Assisting with the preparation of chain of custodies, processing, packing, and shipping collected samples.
• Entering collected field and laboratory data into the environmental database.
• Participating in field monitoring programs as a wildlife monitor as required.
• Promoting environmental awareness on site
• Other technical field and office tasks to support the sustainable development and site operations groups.

Main Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or Diploma from a vocational institution Environmental science, environmental engineering,or similar physical or biological science related field required 
  • From 1 years to less than 3 years Environmental experience on mining operations
  • Driver’s License preferred
  • Fire Arms Certificate (FAC) or Possession & Aquisition License (PAL) or willingness to apply
  • Experience with wildlife monitoring
  • Experience with outboard motors, boats (Pleasure Craft Boat License), snowmobiles.
  • Experience in environmental monitoring (water sampling)
  • Good organizational skills and punctuality
  • Experience working in a mine would be an asset
