Reporting to the Power & Distribution Manager, the Senior Electrical Engineer is responsible for supporting the department engineering services and day-to-day activities with safety as a priority.  This role is responsible for providing engineering services for electrical maintenance, improvements, and resolving emerging issues for the various mine facilities, including supporting key initiatives of power generation, distribution and automation infrastructure.  The Senior Electrical Engineer reviews and provides guidance to junior engineers for documentation and reporting for root-cause analysis, electrical drawings, schematics and other pertinent documentation in accordance with codes and standards.

Main Accountabilities

1. Provide subject matter expertise of electrical systems to support key priorities of Baffinland Iron Mine operations and maintenance as set by Department Manager. 
2. Assist and support the Power & Distribution Team, including Trades, Superintendent and Manager to increase revenue, reduce cost, and enhance safety in alignment with the key business objectives.
3. Provide site-wide electrical engineering services, including but not limited to: 
a. Electrical Safety Program development and implementation
b. Power generation and distribution to mine site assets and infrastructure (up to 16MW @ 13.8kV) 
c. Electrical Reliability issue investigation and corrective actions
d. Process control systems, SCADA and PLC design, implementation, troubleshooting, and optimization
e. Capital and Non-Routine projects design tasks and documentation
f. Preventative Maintenance (PM) procedures and templates development
g. Parts lists and warehouse inventory reviews and guidance for critical equipment.
h. AutoCAD and ETAP (software applications) for electrical system documentation and analysis
4. Support development and integration of AVEVA PI Vision data management and visualization platform.
5. Lead the investigation of electrical and control issues to identify and implement reliability improvements. 
6. Identify, initiate, and guide the planning and implementation of energy efficiency improvements. 
7. Update and develop department standards and performance requirements. 
8. Inspect electrical assets to ensure compliance in accordance with relevant codes and regulations.
9. Build, sustain, and leverage day to day relationships and communication with partners and individuals within area of immediate responsibility and with key stakeholders to enable success of business objectives.
10. Investigate electrical and control issues, and support reliability investigations by others to determine potential improvements and execution of approved solutions and corrective actions.
11. Conduct observations and analyze data in order to bring recommendations for improvements forward.
12. Develop and monitor appropriate KPI’s to measure Electrical Reliability site wide
13. Monitor power consumption and balance to identify opportunities for energy reduction and efficiency.
14. Support the development of electrical component standards and performance requirements.
15. Inspect and plan corrective measure for new and existing equipment installations for Canadian electrical Code compliance and appropriate electrical protection devices.
16. Facilitate and lead team activities and rapid movement events as required.
17. Track, communicate and share results and lessons learned – ensures successes are published and communicated to all employees.
18. Identify sources of information, possible interfaces and detailed process descriptions.
19. Assist in interpreting facts and information gathered to understand current state and defined future states.
20. Focus upon process improvements to enhance productivity, increase revenue, enhance safety and reduce cost, consistent with the strategic direction of the company.
21. Work with regional and mine site leadership and multi-functional teams to identify, develop, execute, and complete selected improvement projects.
22. Act as change agent to instill an operational excellence and continuous improvement culture.
23. Act as an engineering oversight to ensure compliance to HSE, Mine Acts, CSA and CEC Codes.
24. Lead complex field automation troubleshooting and provide recommendation for improvement.
25. Provide findings and recommend improvements to Superintendent and Manager.

 

Secondary Duties and Responsibilities
26. Present findings and make recommendations to Senior and Executive Management Teams. 
27. Work with planners to develop preventative maintenance work orders for improved equipment reliability. 
28. Perform benchmarking activities and standardization of maintenance practices.
29. Perform various project administration tasks, including coordinating meetings, taking meeting minutes, issuing communication releases, and perform maintenance of project tracking logs (i.e. issues, change control, etc.) in order to satisfy project management processes.

Main Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering.
  • Professional Engineering accreditation in Canada, eligible to register within NU/NT
  • Minimum 10 years of electrical engineering experience in heavy industrial and mining facilities
  • Ability to manage competing priorities in a fast paced environment
  • High standards of integrity and safety
  • Strong communication skills
