Reporting to the Manager, Human Resources & Labour Relations, the Mental Health Counsellor will be stationed onsite with responsibility for providing specialized support and counseling to a diverse workforce and working collabarativley with onsite and community stakeholders. Responsibilities include supporting and counseling employees to help them manage and address critical personal issues and provide appropriate recommendations. This role is based at our Mary River Mine on a three week in and three week out rotation.

Main Accountabilities

  • Identify and manage all onsite mental health emergency situations. 
  • Conduct assessments in the following areas.
  • Intake Assessments
    Mental Health Status Assessments
    Crisis Intervention Assessments
    Addictions Assessments
    Psychosocial / Psychoeducational assessments
  • Provides informal and formal mental health counseling services to Baffinland employees and contractors.
    Brief Solution Focused
    Narrative Talk Therapy
    Critical Incident Debriefing
    Cognitive Behavioral 
    Dialectical Behavioral
    Mindfulness Based Counselling
    Humanist / Client Centered Counselling
    Anger Management Counselling
    Addictions Counselling
    Group Therapy
  • Collaborate with on-site and off-site service providers in the delivery of enhanced mental health services.
  • Utilize a trauma-informed and culturally sensitive approach to practice.
  • Advocate for and assist clients in accessing community resources (mental health, health care, housing, emergency protection orders etc.).
  • Maintain up to date records, documentation and maintenance of patient files in a confidential manner.
  • Maintain daily, weekly and monthly reports.
  • Carry out thorough risk assessments and monitoring of clients.
  • Provide education regarding positive mental health and work to decrease stigma regarding accessing services. (ie. Mental Heath Mondays)
  • Provide mental health orientation and training for employees and management.
  • Collaborate with other professionals to develop treatment plans for clients.
  • Assist clients to manage their emotions through de-escalation strategies.
  • Build relationships with community health resources.
  • Assessment of individual clinical and psychosocial needs, urgency, and acuity.
  • Collaboration with Family Physicians and/or other caregivers to provide care, including monitoring
  • Demonstrated ability to tolerate ambiguity and embrace change.

Main Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree - Bachelor's degree or better in Counseling Psychology, Social Work, Nursing  or a related field.
  • Master’s Degree - Masters  degree or better in Counseling Psychology, Social Work, Nursing  or a related field  
  • 3+ years of direct experience working as a Mental Health Counsellor in a health care setting and/or equivalent
  • Experience and training with evidence based therapies (CBT, DBT, Crisis Intervention, Suicide Intervention, Trauma Informed Practice)
  • Must be licensed with relevant regulatory body and eligible for malpractice insurance. 
  • Knowledge and understanding of indigenous culture and values in a regional context.
  • Flexibility in working hours is required.
  • Willing to work in person, virtually, or by phone to provide individual and/or group care.
  • Excelled in leadership, management, motivation, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to speak Inuktitut is an asset.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills (written and oral).
  • Able to work effectively with others and to work independently.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Potential travel to Nunavut communities, often by small aircraft.
  • Arctic experience would be beneficial.
  • Experience working with Impact Benefits Agreements and communities would be an asset.
  • Experience working in a Fly-in / Fly-out environment is an asset
  • Working knowledge of the Personal Health Information and Privacy Act, Health Care Consent Act, Mental Health Act, Substitute Decision-Makers’ Act, Child and Family Service Act, Regulated Health Professionals Act and community resources is required
