Mission for this Position

The Environmental Monitoring Specialist is responsible for optimising the technical implementation of monitoring programs. This role is accountable for reporting including reviewing external reports, and drafting content for internal reporting purposes. This role works closely with the site based field team and operations management to ensure accurate and timely execution of monitoring programs, and ensuring that findings are communicated effectively to implement adaptive management. The candidate will be up to date with current licences and regulations that may effect reporting, and engage in training opportunities with junior staff and operations workers.

Main Accountabilities

  • Support the implementation of the Sustainable Development Policy and Project Certificate commitments by implementing monitoring programs,
  • Responsible for developing a proficient understanding of applicable environmental regulations and legislation and communicating implications on Project operations to management.
  • Work with Environmental Monitoring lead to ensure monitoring programs are in compliance with terms and conditions; track and implement changes, as may be required.
  • Work with Environmental Monitoring lead to review environmental monitoring reports, submissions or memos, produced internally or externally.
  • Guiding implementation of environmental field monitoring programs facilitated by third party consultants by collaborating with Site Environment, Sustainable Development and Operations teams;
  • Work cross-functionally to implement environmental field monitoring programs as the primary liaison to harmonize the planning, execution and continuous improvement of monitoring programs.
  • Provide guidance and oversight to environmental consultants on all freshwater, marine ,terrestrial and air-quality monitoring programs; adapt monitoring programs to new requirements as a result of EA processes; complete management plan updates and coordinate intervener responses;
  • Ensure data management from monitoring programs is securely managed in‐house, in accordance with company policy;
  • Support the preparation of annual operating & monitoring programs and budgets, including programs developed in support of mine permitting.

Main Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s in Environmental science, engineering or related program
  • Experience managing consultants and/or contractors;
  • Experience in the mining sector.
  • Experience working cross-functionally to resolve technical issues and build consensus;
  • Experience with environmental assessments and regulatory reporting;
  • Valid Provincial or Territorial driver’s license is required
  • Results oriented with strong project management and analytical skills.
  • 3-5 years experience in environmental monitoring
  • 3-5 year experience in mining operations
  • Knowledge of relevant environmental legislation, standards and effective industry practices.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook)
